I have a upset client because I scheduled payment withdrawal for 4/15 but it was taken from his bank account last night at midnight and now his bank account is overdrawn.

Pretty much since the invention of IRS Direct Pay, I've stopped efiling with direct debits.  If the client wants to pay electronically I make them do it directly.  Then whatever happens is not my fault. 🙂

If you check the IRS says a direct debit can be a couple of days earlier, or later. I always tell my clients that info

Thanks.  So if a client plans to have the money on the 15th, do you schedule the payment for after the due date?

If the client doesn't have the fund until then and doesn't mind paying a negligible amount of interest (assuming the balance due is not astronomical), that's possible.  Otherwise, making a payment by credit card is a good alternative (as they can still make a timely payment and settle the credit card bill before it is due to avoid interest charges).

Its absolutely wrong that you sign and have a dated ACH and they take the funds in advance.  If you went into the bank with check not dated that day or with your name misspelled they wouldnt honor it.  But if your the IRS you can do as wish.  Apparently.

Technically EFTPS existed before that, but I'm the only non-business I know who ever used it.  The sign up process was antiquated (fill out this form, wait for the post office to deliver you a PIN, log in with the PIN and set a password.  Oh by the way, if you change bank accounts you have to register all over again with a different login, a different PIN that has to be mailed to you, and a different password.)  Not exactly something a client could do on April 13th in time for an April 15th payment!

But with IRS Direct Pay, I'm a Believer. 🙂  Had a client with a balance due come in for signatures today and he wanted to pay by EFT.  I walked him through Direct Pay on my computer.

I have my clients use Direct Pay too and it's easy enough.
