18yrold dghtr student earned 18k, on her rtn I indicated she could/was claimed on another return-no limit on std ded. Her parent's rtn reject, said ssn already used. Why?

Level 7

Is this because her income was over $4,150? Program gave full std deduction $12,000. Or is this a bug?

no, I filed student's return before parents return

I am thinking maybe it is because her income was so high-but she was a student for five months and then graduated

:open_mouth: Student went first? I assume student went through fine? Parents next and was rejected?
The student for sure showed she was claimed by another? After that, I cant think of a reason why.

Scary sh-t. If you can remember, please come back and report. I am curious because I would've filed same without a thought.

I filed a student a few days before the parents and both went through okay.  On the students 1040 form is the box checked under your standard deduction "Someone can claim you as a dependent "?

Hmmm, Ive got a similar student/parent scenario that came in tonight...

18 yo Daughter earned 15K, it gave her the full standard 12k Deduction...she's marked as a  dependent on someone else's return.  Mom asked if she would get more refund if daughter claimed herself, I unchecked the dependent boxes just to be sure but everything stayed the same....so Mom didn't feel bad claiming her.  I get some parents that feel bad claiming their student child and the student doesn't get all their refund.

I'll be filing moms return first though, I don't have sigs from the daughter yet.

I got the 8615 that popped up for the 18 yo daughter, she didn't have any unearned income though, so I dunno why it appeared.

I had the same on a 20 yr old. Claims self but 8615 pops up. Does it pop up due to age 19-23?

question unrelated......there are numerous forms (federal) that are supposed to be ready on 01/31. Are they delayed or do you see the yellow bar across top of form (f4562, 8829 etc...)?

I had one really simple one, and then one that wasn't overly difficult but I ran into that little problem that Intuit didn't think anyone from Minnesota would actually itemize this year.  So now I'm moving down to Alabama where I don't have worry about starting any returns for a couple of weeks.  :truck::truck:
