How do I amend an original return filed as Married Filing Joint to two Married Filing Separate returns?

Solution 

Follow these steps to amend an original return filed as Married Filing Joint as two Married Filing Separate returns:

  1. Go to Screen 1, Client Information
  2. Check the box, "MFJ vs MFS Comparison" under the Filing Status section


     
  3. Go through the various input screens and verify that each itemized deductions, credits, income, etc. have all been properly marked as Taxpayer or Spouse


     
  4. Click on the Forms tab  
  5. Click on the MFJ/MFS Worksheet 
  6. Verify all amounts showing are correctly allocated between the Taxpayer and the Spouse
  7. Go to Screen 59, Amended Return (1040X)
  8. Select the Federal/state return(s) to amend: (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) drop down menu under the Return(s) to Amend section
  9. Check the boxes for Federal and/or State(s)

    • Note: Lacerte will generate pop up windows notifying you of the time and date of the last input asking for you to click OK allowing the program to show these amounts as originally reported.  Click OK.
  10. Click on Tools
  11. Click on Split Joint Return
  12. Type a client number or use the client numbers assigned by Lacerte
  13. Click OK to split the return


     

Screen 59, Amended Return will not split to the MFS returns. Follow these steps to show the originally reported amounts:

  1. Go to Screen 59, Amended Return (for the Taxpayer's return)
  2. Click on the Federal/state return(s) to amend: (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) drop down menu under the Return(s) to Amend section
  3. Uncheck the boxes for Federal and/or State(s) 
  4. Click on the Federal/state return(s) to amend: (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) drop down menu under the Return(s) to Amend section (again)
  5. Check the boxes for Federal and/or State(s)
    • Note: This action will trigger Lacerte to pull in the amounts from the MFJ original return. 
  6. Make any necessary entries from the Amended return
  7. Repeat the Steps 1-6 for the Spouse's return
