Problem Description

How do I e-file two Married Filing Separate (MFS) state returns from one Married FIling Joint (MFJ) federal Form 1040 using ProSeries Professional?

Solution Description
CAUTION:  ProSeries does not support filing state returns with dual resident statuses.  If you need to file more than one return for a state (example, a full year California return, and a part year California return), you can create a copy of the return and change the entries as necessary, or you can use the Split MFJ Return feature in ProSeries.

Using the Split MFJ Return feature to create separate MFS state returns for taxpayer and spouse requires a completed MFJ Form 1040.

To use the Split MFJ feature in ProSeries to create additional client files for MFS state returns:

Preparing the Married Filing Joint return to be split:
  1. Use the TSJ indicators to correctly assign specific data to the taxpayer and spouse or joint.
  2. Prepare the MFJ return for form Federal 1040 and the main taxpayer's state.
  3. Go to the  MFJ vs. MFS Comparison Worksheet.
  4. Click the Check This Box To Calculate Form checkbox near the top of the form.
  5. Review the worksheet to verify that the amounts are accurate for both the taxpayer and spouse. (see note below)

Steps to split the Married Filing Joint return from within the client file:
  1. Open the Federal return for the client.
  2. Click the File menu and choose Split MFJ Return.
  3. Review the instructions in the Split MFJ Return dialog box.

Steps to split the Married Filing Joint return from the HomeBase:

  1. From the 1040 Homebase View:
    1. Left click once to highlight the client file.
    2. Go to the File menu.
    3. Select Split MFJ Return
  1. Review the instructions in the Split MFJ Return dialog box.

Preparing the Married Filing Separate returns to be Filed Electronically:

  1. Open each MFS return and select the state(s) for the taxpayer on his copy and the state(s) for the spouse on her copy.
  2. Review all returns for accuracy.
  3. Run Final Review and fix any errors.
  4. Efile the original Federal 1040 and the separate state returns.

NOTE:
  • Review Tax Help for the MFJ vs MFS worksheet details how ProSeries assigns data to the taxpayer and spouse.
  • It may be necessary to manually adjust federal inputs in the new returns to correctly reflect state calculations.
  • The new returns may cause a Duplicate SSN error for returns which are to be efiled.
